III. General professional experience:
I was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern
District of Illinois, 1962-66. I tried various civil, criminal and
appellate cases and was specially assigned to the Organized Crime section.
I left to engage in private practice engaged mainly in civil trial, health
care and product liability law, as well as a general practice in
transactional law. I was appointed to the bench in 1987 and served in
Chicago, Wilmington, Indiana and Miami. During my tenure I developed a
specialty in Mediation. I was trained in mediation and advanced mediation
skills. I then taught mediation skills for the FJC as well as at DePaul
University Law School and Dispute Resolution Institute. I also conduct
regional seminars for judges in mediation training.
IV. General pertinent experience:
I have mediated approximately 400-500 disputes over the
years. Since leaving the bench I have mediated all over the country. I
have mediated contract disputes, bankruptcy plans, preferences, lien
disputes, water rights case, discrimination cases, class actions,
discharge issues, securities fraud litigation, the entire gamut of
bankruptcy law as well as general civil disputes.
I am currently a member of the team which is writing the
new mediation code for the Ministry of Justice of Thailand under a World
Bank grant.

I have been a US Bankruptcy Judge 1987-2002. I am
currently of counsel to the bankruptcy department of the law firm of
Greenberg, Traurig. I engage in my mediation practice under my
corporation, Erwin I. Katz, Ltd.
